The paper reviews current understanding of mast cell’s functions in physiological conditions and during disease. In the latter case mast cells, as part of immune system, are capable to elicit both protective and pathogenic role. The balance of these two trends determines the ultimate effect of mast cell’s influence on patient’s health and life. Broad functional spectrum of mast cells in innate as well as in adaptive immune response determines their crucial role in pathological conditions of virtually all organs and tissues in human organism.
