Dendritic cells are widely represented in organs and tissues, but their quantity is small (less than 1-2%). Despite the small numbers, the dendritic cells are extraordinarily high-efficiency. They play a central role in the initiation of the innate and adaptive immune response, as well as in the differentiation of regulatory T cells required for tolerance to its own cells. Dendritic cells are the main «professional» antigen-presenting cells.
